In 2017 the Roanoke Valley Greenway Commission celebrated its 20th anniversary and began looking ahead to plan for the future. The 2018 Roanoke Valley Greenway Plan provides a review of the 2007 Update to the Roanoke Valley Conceptual Greenway Plan and a look forward to the next decade. The purpose is to document progress towards goals identified in previous plans, to consider additional routes and issues, and to incorporate Botetourt County, a new member of the Greenway Commission, into the planning process and vision.
The proposed Roanoke Valley Greenway network is shown on the map. The vision is to have Roanoke River Greenway as the backbone of the system, running west to east, and then having north-south routes tying to Botetourt County and to the existing public lands and trail opportunities surrounding the Valley. The greenway network is part of the bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure for the region and provides the arterial routes, with connectivity to neighborhoods via sidewalks, bike lanes, and on-road facilities.
Community Meeting: April 19, 2018
The Greenway Commission will present a summary of the draft Plan and exhibits at an open house community meeting on April 19, 2018 at the Berglund Center from 4-7 p.m. Participants can learn more about the public input behind the proposed routes, the regional goals for connectivity and more. Commission members and locality staff will be available to answer questions.
